Faux Sure: Cozy Up Your Home with Faux Fur

by Robin February 15, 2012

With blistery weather causing the thermometer to dip to frosty temperatures, the winter season beckons for fabulous, cozy décor options.

With its luxe style and oh-so-soft splendor, faux fur instantly adds a dose of Old Hollywood glamour to the room, along with textural interest, as seen in Jennifer Brouwer Design’s Frybrook project. A plush faux fur throw on the bed exudes elegance when paired with rich aubergine pillows and damask nailhead trim upholstered headboard, and the faux animal pelt brings warmth to the living room infused with color. “Animal pelts are fun and whimsical,” says Brouwer. “Both elements are hot in 2012.”

Hollywood glamour not your forte? As seen in this guestroom design by Tilton Fenwick, the cottage-like decor features their signature peacock logo on the walls, a four-post spindle bed, and a faux sheepskin pellet layered over an abaca rug. “We love sheepskin at the side of a bed in winter for extra-cozy warmth underfoot,” says one of the firm’s founders Suysel dePedro Cunningham. “The abaca is great year round, but when it gets colder, this extra layer adds texture and a whole new level of depth to the room.”

Cozy up your décor with faux fur, ranging from small accessories to oversized pieces:

Translating Trends: The Monogram

by Robin January 4, 2012

Embroidered, stamped, woven or sewn, no matter the method, monogramming is an extra special way to personalize items for your home and life. Have a great pillow that’s been passed down through the years? Add your initials, or your grandmothers, in a lower corner! Below, a round-up of my favorite monogramming resources to help you personalize…just about everything…in just about every room in the house!

In the Bedroom

When monogrammed, Pottery Barn’s simple, lovely Plaza linen collection is dressed up just a touch. Monogramming just one element in a room, like these shams, adds a slightly traditional touch. Remember…a little initial goes a long way!

In the Kitchen

This cute monogrammed cheese plate and cheese knife (also monogrammed!) from C Wonder would be an adorable wedding gift for a gourmand couple. This funky new shop, started by Chris Burch (yes…Tory Burch’s ex), is chock full of bright, preppy pieces for your home and wardrobe. Many of them come with the option to truly make your own.

In the Living Room

West Elm’s menswear-inspired herringbone throws can be monogrammed for an ultra personal touch. This simple, understated monogram is a single letter in a less-traditional cursive font. So pretty and modern!

In the Bathroom

For those lucky enough to live near Savannah, GA, Number Four Eleven has a storefront where you can see their gorgeous inventory in person. Everyone else will have to browse their collection of furniture, home accessories and bed and bath linens on their web site. For the items that can be monogrammed, like these gorgeous Matouk Cairo Towels, you can choose from a wide array of font style and thread colors…the world is your oyster!

New Years Resolutions for the Home

by Robin January 2, 2012

Hello 2012! Many people set New Years resolutions, but do you set New Years resolutions for your home? Now is the time to start new and fresh. Your home should be a place that you can relax and recharge before you go out and take on the world. Remember…Confidence Begins at Home!

Here are my recommendations for ways to start 2012 off on the right foot!

1. Get organized!

This seems to be on my list every year. Remember, clutter isn’t just unsightly, a cluttered home means a cluttered mind. Get organized and start your year off right.

Simplifying Fabulous

2. Think light, bright and happy

Add a fab new standing lamp or table lamp to an area that needs more light or that just needs a new spark. It doesn’t just give off light, it adds visual interest and fresh energy to a stale area of a house.

3. Feng Shui-ify Your Place

Give your home (and life), a holistic boost. Hire a good feng shui consultant and put your new year on the right path!

4. Try Something New!

This is the year to push yourself outside your comfort zone. Paint the wall behind your sofa or bed a bright new color. Who knows, you may start to see things in a whole new fashion. It  may push you  to see things differently in the new year.

Simplifying Fabulous

5. Rotate Your Wall Art

Shape things up in the new year. Change the look and feel of room by framing aspirational photographs or art of places you want to go, things you want to see, or of abundance to help encourage that in your life. (lush trees, etc.) This can help shift your energy and help you start 2012 off in a positive light!

What are YOUR New Years resolutions for the home?

Fab Friday with Faith Taylor of Wyndham Worldwide

by Robin December 30, 2011

Simplifying Fabulous! with Faith Taylor of Wyndham Worldwide

ABOUT At this time of year I often feel that I need a post-holidays vacation to unwind from the holidays! Today I wanted to highlight a woman who is doing BIG things for the travel industry. Meet Faith Taylor, Senior Vice President, Sustainability and Innovation for the Wyndham Green Program of Wyndham Worldwide. With more than 58 brands (such as Days Inn, Super 8, Ramada, Wyndham, Wingate by Wyndham, RCI, Wyndham Vacation Timeshare…) in over 100 countries and revenues of more than $4 billion in 2010, Wyndham Worldwide is one of the world’s largest hospitality companies.  Under Taylor’s leadership, the Wyndham Green program has been recognized in 2011 as one of the top 100 Greenest Companies in America and #1 in the Hotel and Restaurant category and they have been named an S&P 500 Carbon Disclosure Leader.  The Company has undertaken many exciting green initiatives including installing solar panels at locations around the world and co-developing a green uniform program with Cintas made of recycled materials recognized for their innovation by Cornell University!

Robin Baron: Tell us a bit about what you do…
Faith Taylor: I started the Sustainability and Innovation program for Wyndham Worldwide over 5 years ago as a grass roots organization with the endorsement of our CEO Steve Holmes. Today it is a top 5 strategic priority for the Company. This has been an incredible journey within a great company and passionate people who make a difference everyday. We have a green council made up of members from all over the world who work on the program. We focus on the triple bottom line improving the lives of people, our profits and, most importantly, our planet. I am on the executive committees for the World Travel and Tourism Council, International Tourism Partnership and I chair the American Hotel Lodging Association environmental and engineering committee.

Robin Baron: What is your personal mantra?
FT: Be the Change You Wish to See in The World.

Robin Baron: What are some of the most exciting things you’re seeing right now in green design?
FT: I have seen that we have the technology and capability to solve a lot of the problems we have today. I am an optimist. I can see that technology can help us track and measure our results. I also see the development of cost neutral design and cost effective renewable energy.  I am a believer that we will be sustainable and have resources for us to use today as well as our children and future generations even though we are currently using 1.4 times more resources of the earth than it can support.

Faith Taylor, Wyndham Worldwide | Simplifying Fabulous

Robin Baron: Does green architecture and design have a certain “look”?
FT: No good green design is seamless and healthier for people who live and work in the buildings. It is better because it uses day lighting, fresh air that re-circulates in the building and less chemicals used in paints and FF&E installed in them. I believe that it can be done as our corporate headquarters is Silver LEED certified and we have been able to experience the difference as well as we have seen the operational savings to our Company’s bottom line.  Also the intangible benefits are tremendous in that we can take pride in “walking the talk”.

Faith Taylor, Wyndham | Simplifying Fabulous

Wyndham Corporate Headquarters, Parsippany, NJ

Robin Baron: Do the eco-decisions you make at work inform your home life
FT: Yes – the choices we make everyday do impact us across our entire lives. Using energy-efficient lighting at work and at home or using low-volatile organic compound paint makes sense in both places. It is important to think about our environment and how it impacts us. I believe in balance. We need to work, find time for ourselves. I do this through yoga and by taking time off to spend in nature and with my family. One of my most favorite places is Martha’s Vineyard. My family and I spend a lot of time at the beach, riding bikes and just being together. I love it there.

Faith Taylor, Wyndham Worldwide | Simplifying Fabulous

Robin Baron: –What do you love most about your home and why?
FT: I love my family and the creative energy we have in our house.  We have artwork all over our home that reflects my multi-cultural background.  My dad is Black and my mother is Japanese.  We have antique kimonos and Japanese prints as well as art by Black artists and masks from Africa.  It is eclectic, colorful and warm and we incorporate a lot of windows and light into the spaces.  My family is creative as well, my daughter is an incredible painter, my son is a writer studying at Brown and my husband and I have written and published songs.   So you can imagine it is a very creative, yet comfortable and active household outside of our work.

RB: What is the one thing in your home that everyone always comments on?
FT: The artwork, music and the warmth.  Kids and people come and hang out all of the time.  We have lots of friends and family, and have lots of BBQ’s and celebrations.

Translating Trends: Gaga for Glitter

by Robin December 28, 2011

There has always been something magical about glitter. It always makes a shimmery presence this time of year, on holiday party outfits and part of festive at midnight on December 31st.

But why should we limit this decorative element to the holidays? Surely we could all use a bit of magic in our homes year round! I’ve found some fabulous ways to incorporate glitter into your daily design, from dramatic glam to subtle sparkle.

From the Ground Up

Turn a drab concrete slab into glittery goodness with this project from Kathy of Crafty Chica. We love the idea of using it to glam up a garage or art studio.

Crafty Chica | Simplifying Fabulous

Matted & Framed

Who says glitter has to be overwhelming? This sweet and sophisticated wall art by Steph from Glitter & Goat Cheese adds a little dazzle to the room without dominating. And what a fun craft project this would be to do with the kids over the winter break!

Glitter Wall Art | Simplifying Fabulous

Full Feature Wall

Anyone remember the movie “Napoleon Dynamite” (“my lips hurt real bad!”)? Well, Napoleon’s nerdy brother Kip, played by Aaron Ruell, is a really fantastic photographer in real life, creating color-saturated interior scenes in each of his photographs. I especially was drawn to this piece featuring a rose-colored glitter wall. How fabulous would this look in a Hollywood Regency style room? To recreate the look at home, Benjamin Moore makes a terrific glittery topcoat called Studio Finishes Glitter Effect (311). Apply it to add a veil of iridescent glimmer to your walls or even to update a piece of furniture.

Punchy Paper

If you prefer glitter in smaller doses, but still want to make a bold statement, Osborne & Little’s Teatro Collection includes glitter wallpapers, such as Colombina and Manzoni (seen below). Apply to your walls, shelves and furniture to add a touch of sparkle.

Not so Foreign Accents

Not into the glitz and glam? This whimsical birdcage, created by Paula from Frog Prince Paperie created for an enchanting baby shower, is accented with glitter birds and flowers. It would look oh so charming in a little girl’s room and is a perfect illustration of how glitter can be used in vintage-inspired design. Jessica from Such Pretty Things channeled a similar look, bunching glittery branches together and perching butterflies and birds in them for a candy-colored piece that wows.

Fab Friday with Evette Ríos of The Chew

Simplifying Fabulous! with Evette Ríos of The Chew

ABOUT Evette Ríos is a craft, design and entertaining expert, and all around home enthusiast. She’s the field correspondent on the new ABC Daytime Show The Chew and is a contributor to the Rachael Ray Show. Her Puerto Rican roots, love of travel, and years mentoring with some of NYC’s finest architects and designers have both inspired and influenced her work. However, nothing sparked Evette’s design interests more than watching her parents work on homes as a child.  A life-long New Yorker, she lives downtown with her dog Baloo and cats Henwin & Miss Kitty.

Robin Baron: Tell us a bit about what you do…
Evette Ríos: I am the correspondent on the new daytime TV show, The Chew.  I travel around the country covering food and crafting trends. It’s a great way to meet some amazing people, try delicious food and see this terrific country of ours.

Evette Rios | Simplifying Fabulous
RB: Where do you find creative inspiration for your job?
ER: I get a ton of inspiration from necessity. I grew up in a family where things were always reused and repurposed. When I would fall in love with something while I was with my mom as a kid she would always tell me “Ay, Eso Se Hace” which means “You Can Make That” in Spanish. As a kid it would frustrate the heck out of me but as an adult it fuels me! I also LOVE Pinterest.com, it keeps me abreast of what all of my crafting buddies are up to and it gives me the chance to see what others think of my projects!

RB: What is the favorite craft or project that you have done?
ER: OMG, that is a tough one…hmm. I guess one of the coolest ones I have ever done, was for a show I did on the Planet Green network called The G Word. I created a coffee table that had a scrabble game in the middle and two storage compartments for additional games out of an old glass top coffee table that lost it’s glass. The inside was built out and painted pink and the outside was painted grey with shiny nickel hardware. It kind of looked like a little elephant. It was just the coolest, I was sad to have to give it away but I got to play a game of scrabble on it before I handed off to the new owners so that wasn’t too bad!

Evette Rios | Simplifying Fabulous

before…

Evette Rios | Simplifying Fabulous

…and after!

RB: How would you describe your workspace? Your home décor?
ER: My personal style is a little masculine. I love strong industrial looking things, aluminum furniture, dark well grained woods and bright exotic prints. I am SO into old scientific equipment. I have an old microscope on my side table right now that I absolutely love.

RB: What is the one thing in your home that everyone always comments on?
ER: The Syrian Mother of pearl mirror over my entry console table. I love it too. It’s one of those things that makes me happy!

Evette Rios | Simplifying Fabulous

RB: What is your personal mantra?
ER: “Wrong and Strong.” I learned this from a theater professor in college and it really stuck with me. I guess the jist of it is, when you make a decision, you should commit to it with everything in you. It’s no use doing anything half way!

Ski Lodge-Inspired Decor

by Robin December 21, 2011

Brrr! The winter season has finally arrived and has us craving some coziness this holiday season! One of the comfiest places I can think of is a ski lodge…a crackling fire burns while I’m curled up in a plush leather chair, a big mug of hot cocoa in hand, reading my favorite novel as the snow falls outside the window. Sigh… But in order to get to a ski lodge, it requires one to trek out into that blistery weather – no, thank you!

So instead of going to the mountain, bring the mountain to you. With just a few key pieces you can add some alpine glam to your home, sans the slopes.

Antlers

I know…they’re EVERYWHERE right now, but a set of antlers on a wall is the perfect way to get the lodge look in an instant. Whether you stumbled across a cool set at a flea market or you go mass-market and pick them up at your nearest West Elm, they lend a back country feel that’s hard to create otherwise!

Plaid

What’s a ski lodge without some plaid? It’s busy design can be a bit overwhelming so use it in small doses. A simple buffalo check throw, such as this woolen one from Faribault Mill, is all the plaid you need to transport you to that special cozy place. When you’re not curled up with it, keep it on display on your couch or rolled up in a wicker basket.

Wall Art

Lodges bring a sense of adventure with them, and even if you’re more of a homebody than a snow bunny, you can still incorporate some ski lodge elements into your décor as wall art! Pottery Barn has some fabulous vintage snowshoes and skis to add an outdoor ambiance to your interiors.

Firewood

Even if you don’t have a fireplace, a stack of firewood or a basket filled with a few pieces can give a cozy rustic appearance. The aroma alone can transport you to higher elevations.

Furniture

Every good lodge has a “perfect chair.” You know what kind I’m talking about…a worn, leather piece that you can plop down on and sink right into. This club chair from Anthropologie is made of distressed leather, so you have the cozy worn look without the wear. All you need is a cup of cocoa!

Mix in reclaimed or distressed wood pieces with the thought that you may not necessarily want the wintery look year-round. Invest in furniture that is versatile, such as this console, also from Anthropologie. The wood is rustic, but the design isn’t heavy, allowing you to go from lodge to French country to shabby chic easily.

Fab Friday: Collector, Bill Indursky

by Robin December 16, 2011

Simplifying Fabulous! with Bill Indursky

ABOUT Bill Indursky co-founded VandM.com, one of the largest vintage, antique, and design e commerce websites on the internet. VandM features over 16,000 amazing items from around the world and their DESIGNinTELL magazine is filled with informative articles and inSIDERS profiles.

Bill also utilizes his great eye for design for his own media-worthy home, which has landed on three Top 10 lists on design site Apartment Therapy (best small space, best apartment 2010, best spaces NYC), and on The Huffington Post‘s real estate house tour section.

Robin Baron: What inspired you to start VandM.com?
Bill Indursky: I think most people accidently fall into the jobs that they do in order to make a living.  The trick to finding success, especially for creative people, is one part undying ambition, one part luck, one part timing, and a large part strong motivation to push us to keep trying.

When I started VandM.com, I had been designing websites, running my own small struggling 10-year-old web firm. I was looking for a way out. By chance, a man I had worked with one time called me to be part of another project.  That project did not work out but we both thought that there was something we could work on together – VandM was born.

Chris and I worked relentlessly during the first 2 ½ years.  We practically starved. But I never give up – ever – even if I probably should.  Perhaps it is my ego, control issues, or simply I am naïve, but no matter what, I never give up. Several years, and two more owners later, our company is now about to be worth millions.  But both Chris and I had to put up with almost unimaginable bull and endless work and sacrifice.  He left our company recently to pursue some other dreams but I still hold the torch for both of us now.

I never thought I would be working in the antique and home décor industries – it seems like most people, I fell somewhat into it.  But you see, as long as you are open, ambitious, have a little luck, have a little timing, and of course NEVER give up – anyone can do it!

RB: What are a few of your favorite pieces on the site right now?
BI: That is like asking me to pick my favorite child, which, like most parents, I could do, but might not be fair. What I think I love most is that we have items at all sorts of price points that all represent a great value.  I love the fun flea market quality of the site where you discover something new each time – a real gem where you think… my god, why has no one snatched this treasure up!  With over 16,000 items to buy on the site, 300-400 items new each week, it changes so often that it is like a dream never-ending flea market.

RB: How would you describe your personal style?
BI: As a child my personal style was often called “different” and “unusual,” which I believe is the nice way of saying “ugly.”  I like to mix apparently two disconnected things. For example, I called a recent outfit “Farnsworth Bently (P. Diddy’s former man servant)” meets “a Christmas leprechaun.” All my design is like this; two disparate things creating something new in a fresh and fun way.  My own apartment is “London bachelor pad” meets “urban Adirondack.”

RB: How did your passion for home design start?
BI: I got my undergrad and graduate degrees in Architecture.  I knew I always wanted to be an architect but it was really sealed for me when I was fourteen years old.  I went to the Holy Seplica in Jerusalem where Jesus was taken down off his cross and cleaned, then brought into the interior of the early church to be laid out. When we entered the church I saw just how cavernous and soaring the interior was. Light at the dome clearstory windows gently shimmered against small gold tiles embedded into the mud walls.  It was the first time I ever FELT architecture.  It was the first time I thought space could move you.  After that I was committed to creating moving spaces that people noticed.  How many spaces do we go into and never notice?  I would say most of them.

RB: You showed me photos of your fabulous Apartment Therapy-featured apartment! From the dark walls to the edgy art collection, it’s clear that you’re a risk taker! Where did this come from?
BI: The funny thing is that I never think of it as odd or edgy. My apartment may be atypical, but to me all this is normal.  I don’t know what that says about me but I guess my normal is edgy and risky!

RB: What do you love most about your home and why?
BI: I love that my home is actually warm, relaxing and comforting.  Not words you would normally put together with all black space with skulls, but there you are!  I think it is important to have a wonderful balance between soft and hard furnishings. I think most architects are obsessed with cold, hard, structure and don’t ever explore the softer side of design. It is important to have a balance. My home has comfy chairs (from my own site but recovered in new upholstery) and hard furnishings like desks as well. Comfort is both.

RB: What is the one thing in your home that everyone always comments on?
BI: I think everybody comments on the “bombs” the most.  It is a ceramic prototype from an Argentine artist (that I also got from my site).

RB: If you could start from scratch with your place, what would you do?
BI: I live in my 350-square-feet of heaven with my longtime boyfriend and dog. They have shaped the look of the space as well. I designed it with all of us in mind. It was a lot of give and take. If I had to do it over for myself it might look like a 16th century Venetian Palazzo.  Who doesn’t love Venetian Palazzos? I am Italian, gay, and Jewish, so if I was left to my own devices the place might look some Rococo fantasy – gold gilt everything, murals, face it with the trifecta too much can never be enough with that combo!

Seven Decorating Tips for a Festive Holiday Mantel

by Robin December 14, 2011

With stockings hung by the chimney with care, make sure St. Nicholas does not find the mantle bare! When decorated for the holidays, a fireplace mantel comes to life, creating a warm, homey ambiance. To help make sure you don’t find coal in your stocking come Christmas morning, we asked Santa’s little helpers (aka our favorite bloggers and stylists) for some decorating tips to create a festive mantel for the holidays.

1.  Candles, candles, candles…
“Candles, candleholders, and glass lanterns can all be found at local dollar stores and you rarely need much else to be festive,” says Tonya Lee, the  Budget Decorating Guide for About.com. Dress up the candles and candle holders with craft items; For a splash of color, fill lanterns with pretty holiday candy.

2.  Take Time to Reflect
You can never go wrong with the traditional mirror-over-a-mantel idea, but take it a step further by using the reflection to highlight your décor. “Removable holiday decals are a wonderful way to dress up a mirror,” suggests Tonya. “Or use thin fishing line or ribbon to hang ornaments or glittery snowflakes from the ceiling in front of the mirror.” The sparkle will shine twice as nice thanks to the reflection.

3.  Get Back to Nature
Don’t let the Christmas tree be the only form of Mother Nature found in your home this holiday season. Bring in acorns, nuts, and evergreen leaves for a bit of seasonal allure. “One of my favorite things to do in December is to force paperwhite bulbs,” says Jennifer of The Newlywed Diaries. “They grow without soil in a variety of mediums (anything nonmetal that can support a root system – think colorful pebbles or marbles).” These low maintenance plants can be placed in individual pots and lined upon a mantel. “As a bonus, individual blooms make sweet parting gifts for your holiday party guests,” says Jennifer.

4.  Use Props
Use items that are already found around the home this time of year to add festive flair to your mantel, such as holiday cards and presents. “When layered, color-coordinated wrappings can create a pretty display,” Tonya explains. Or find a spot for those holiday cards by placing two vases at each end of your mantel, stringing a line between and use twine, ribbon, or wooden clothespins to drape a frugal, yet chic, mantel garland.

5.  Be Dramatic
“When it comes to decorating with greens, I always say more is best,” says Seleta of Simply Seleta. “Instead of layering with a single strand of garland, try two for a more opulent feel.  Also, don’t be afraid to mix your greens for added drama. I like adding plants with oversized leaves to the mix.” For those not comfortable with arranging loose garland or greens, for fear of little wandering hands, Seleta suggests placing cuttings in a series of containers. “The key here is to use the same colors or textures in the containers but in different sizes. This brings a collected look, which is unexpected and interesting to the eye.

6.  Get the {Focal} Point
“If your focal point is dead center on the mantel, make sure that the tallest item is in the center then have the remaining items taper off on either side,” says Seleta.

7.  Add an Element of Surprise
Once you line the mantel with your main filler, such as the garland, embellish with layers of your favorite accent color (like a vibrant teal), in various shades.  “Then use your smallest item ever-so-subtly as a final layer in a surprise color, such as silver snowflakes or votives,” explains Seleta.
