Translating Trends: The Monogram

by Robin January 4, 2012

Embroidered, stamped, woven or sewn, no matter the method, monogramming is an extra special way to personalize items for your home and life. Have a great pillow that’s been passed down through the years? Add your initials, or your grandmothers, in a lower corner! Below, a round-up of my favorite monogramming resources to help you personalize…just about everything…in just about every room in the house!

In the Bedroom

When monogrammed, Pottery Barn’s simple, lovely Plaza linen collection is dressed up just a touch. Monogramming just one element in a room, like these shams, adds a slightly traditional touch. Remember…a little initial goes a long way!

In the Kitchen

This cute monogrammed cheese plate and cheese knife (also monogrammed!) from C Wonder would be an adorable wedding gift for a gourmand couple. This funky new shop, started by Chris Burch (yes…Tory Burch’s ex), is chock full of bright, preppy pieces for your home and wardrobe. Many of them come with the option to truly make your own.

In the Living Room

West Elm’s menswear-inspired herringbone throws can be monogrammed for an ultra personal touch. This simple, understated monogram is a single letter in a less-traditional cursive font. So pretty and modern!

In the Bathroom

For those lucky enough to live near Savannah, GA, Number Four Eleven has a storefront where you can see their gorgeous inventory in person. Everyone else will have to browse their collection of furniture, home accessories and bed and bath linens on their web site. For the items that can be monogrammed, like these gorgeous Matouk Cairo Towels, you can choose from a wide array of font style and thread colors…the world is your oyster!

New Years Resolutions for the Home

by Robin January 2, 2012

Hello 2012! Many people set New Years resolutions, but do you set New Years resolutions for your home? Now is the time to start new and fresh. Your home should be a place that you can relax and recharge before you go out and take on the world. Remember…Confidence Begins at Home!

Here are my recommendations for ways to start 2012 off on the right foot!

1. Get organized!

This seems to be on my list every year. Remember, clutter isn’t just unsightly, a cluttered home means a cluttered mind. Get organized and start your year off right.

Simplifying Fabulous

2. Think light, bright and happy

Add a fab new standing lamp or table lamp to an area that needs more light or that just needs a new spark. It doesn’t just give off light, it adds visual interest and fresh energy to a stale area of a house.

3. Feng Shui-ify Your Place

Give your home (and life), a holistic boost. Hire a good feng shui consultant and put your new year on the right path!

4. Try Something New!

This is the year to push yourself outside your comfort zone. Paint the wall behind your sofa or bed a bright new color. Who knows, you may start to see things in a whole new fashion. It  may push you  to see things differently in the new year.

Simplifying Fabulous

5. Rotate Your Wall Art

Shape things up in the new year. Change the look and feel of room by framing aspirational photographs or art of places you want to go, things you want to see, or of abundance to help encourage that in your life. (lush trees, etc.) This can help shift your energy and help you start 2012 off in a positive light!

ELLE Decor, Best Rooms of 2011

by Robin December 26, 2011

What better way to end the exciting, whirlwind of a year that was 2011 than to have ELLE Decor ask me to be one of 30 contributors to their “Best of” 2011 slideshow. I was asked to choose my favorite one image from one of their featured projects of 2011. It was a lot of fun to browse through ELLE Decor’s online lookbook for THE space.

It didn’t take long to come across actress Keri Russell’s Brooklyn brownstone that she shares with her husband and son.

I love the mix of old and new in this industrial glam space (see the image below!)  The combination of exposed brick and reclaimed wood with modern light fixtures, airy drapes, and modern art creates an unexpected, warm look.

And it seems that I wasn’t the only one… Sarah Firshein, the editor of Curbed thought that “Keri Russell’s kitchen/breakfast area in her Brooklyn home is comfortable yet elegant, and I can imagine it’s the kind of space people just want to hang out in. I love the glassy, gorgeous Ochre chandelier and the way the urban-feeling metal of the wire chairs plays off the wood table, walls, and cabinets,” and Bradford Crowder of The Bedlam of Beefy also chose it, saying that the project is “a great mix of styles and textures. I can easily envision myself inhabiting this space, relaxing over a cup of coffee or clinking cocktails at a cozy soiree.”

What a charming dressing room…

…attached to a stunning and super peaceful master bedroom! I love how Keri Russell and her husband have a great mix of high and low… An antique chandelier  hangs over an IKEA sheepskin rug. The walls are painted a gorgeous Benjamin Moore neutral called Stone Hearth.

How to Decorate your Dining Room: Tips of the Trade

by Robin December 12, 2011

Whether your style is formal or funky, the dining room is a great place to express your total fabulous-ness! Confidence Begins at Home, and  I have plenty of tips and tricks that will give you the best look for your life! Let me show you how to approach your dining room décor at the Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman showrooms in the D&D Building.

Texture + Shape = Simply Great!

1. The Round Table: A round table lets everyone easily converse and, as a bonus, you can be a little more fun and free with your chairs because there is no “head of the table” formality. This particular piece comes with a hidden lazy susan!

2. Color and Pattern: Mixing patterns can make your space totally your own!  Use a neutral floor covering to tie all the pieces together.

3. The Height of Drama! Vary the height of the furniture and fixtures in your room so that your eye stays interested moving around the room up and down.

Go With the Unexpected

1. The Rectangular Table: This is the more traditional choice, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun!  Rectangular tables are great for unique centerpieces so you can mix the traditional and modern.

2. Mixing Materials: Mix wood with mirror or metal to break the rules a bit!

3. Paint a wall: This is an inexpensive way to make a room totally your own.  The color you choose will pop the wall and bring out the colors in the rest of the room!

Meet Your Match in…Miss.Matched!

1. Life’s a Picnic: This picnic table is a great example of how you can incorporate unexpected styles into your home.  This table would be at home in the outside but bring it indoors brings out the unusual details and makes it interesting!

2. Bring it All Together: A great way to create a cohesive look is to actually MISmatching your furniture!  All the chairs around this table are different but they fit together because of their complementary colors and textures.

3. Mixing Materials: If you feel your dining room is “too much” of one thing you can easily mix in some different materials to infuse a new feeling.  Too farmhouse? Add some chrome! Too stark? Add some velvet!  Really play with the materials and textures to make your home your own!

Create a Silver and Gold Holiday Table

by Robin December 7, 2011

Silver and gold has become just as prominent a holiday color combination as Christmas’ red and green and Hanukkah’s blue and white. The metallic palette is compatible with any tradition or celebration, allowing you to illuminate your home from Thanksgiving to New Years. If you’re planning on entertaining, the tabletop is the ideal place to show off a little bling. Find inspiration from these three tabletop designs and you’ll have no trouble bringing the modern elegance of sparkling silver and glimmering gold into your next festive fete. And remember…at the holidays, there is no such thing as too much sparkle!

Beauty on a Budget

Jennifer Sbranti of the Hostess with the Mostess proves that you can have a beautiful setting without spending a ton of money. She created a gorgeous silver and gold shimmer tabletop by layering white gold-rimmed china on metallic chargers, found at chains like  Target for affordable prices. For centerpieces, she took two 12-inch ornament stands and dressed them up with matte and shiny gold and silver ornaments, added silver and gold garland down the middle and topped it off with gold foil-finished votive holders. To add further embellishment Jennifer suggests “wraping gold berry spray around the candle holders, or use it to create napkin rings,” suggests And we can’t overlook that fabulous table runner, which is nothing more than an inexpensive silver curtain panel from IKEA. “This same concept can be used with your favorite sparkly fabric or shiny gift wrap paper,” says Jennifer. “And if you’re using assigned seating, look for silver and gold ball ornament place card holders!”

DIY Diva
With the vision of creating a synonymous holiday tabletop, entertaining extraordinaire Heather Christo created a glamorous “Winter Wonderland” theme that incorporates silver and gold metallics. This project was really focused on the fantastical decorations which are surprisingly simple to make. To create the frosted-over-tree affect for the centerpiece, she took branches from a Dogwood tree in her backyard, spray painted them silver and placed them in a large clear cylinder vase. She strung icicle lights throughout the “tree” and perched little glass birds in the branches.

The sparkling centerpiece base is actually 10lbs of silver spray painted whole nuts. To coat the nuts thoroughly, wear gloves and put the nuts in a thick paper bag (a little at a time), blast some spray paint into the bag and shake, shake, shake! Spread on paper to dry.

Instead of flowers, which can get expensive in the dead of winter, Heather used two large bunches of Baby’s Breath, spray painted with a thin coat of silver paint, followed with silver glitter spray paint for a frozen effect and arranged in a crystal bowl, and topped it with another whimsical silver-and-gold bird. For the table settings, she used regular white Lenox china and dressed it up with metallic chargers and candlesticks, appliqued votives, and clear Lucite flatware. The finished product was rich, elegant, and festive.

New Year’s Eve-Inspired
If your heart and clocks are set more on New Year’s Eve, check out this time-stopping tablescape from Elizabeth Anne Designs styled by Amber Karson Events and photographed by Sweet Tea Photography. It’s all about the glitz and glam with this color palette that features a touch of sparkle on everything from the place settings to the s’mores dipped with golden sprinkles! (YUM!!) Gold plates are stacked on gold chargers, creating a striking statement when mixed with the gold-bauble-filled white salad bowls. An oversized silver pocket watch acts as an unexpected centerpiece that will have your guests reminiscing the highs and lows of 2011. A pretty countdown wall created with silver and gold picture frames makes for a perfect backdrop (and great for photo ops!).

Fab Friday: Advert Girl, Denise Blasevick

by Robin December 2, 2011

Simplifying Fabulous! with Denise Blasevick

ABOUT Denise is one motivated and inspirational woman! As CEO of The S3 Agency (what she describes as “half ad agency / half PR firm / half social media hotbed”), she’s developed groundbreaking-and award winning!-communications programs for clients like Aston Martin, Eight O’Clock Coffee, the NBA, Turtle Back Zoo and Wyndham Worldwide. Since starting The S3 Agency in 2001, she has helped it grow to a multi-million dollar enterprise that ranks among New Jersey’s largest woman-owned businesses. Denise is a frequent speaker and featured marketing expert in local and national media. When she’s not dreaming up creative ideas for clients, Denise can be found spending time with her husband and 5-year-old son; doing crossword puzzles; traveling; attempting yoga; or tweeting as @AdvertGirl.

Robin Baron: Tell us a bit about what you do…
Denise Blasevick: I run a creative company called The S3 Agency. We specialize in helping companies large and small conquer their communication challenges by ideating and executing unique, breakthrough strategies to reach their audiences. Think Don Draper on Mad Men – only much nicer and more modern.

I spend my days (and nights) thinking of creative ideas for some of the best brands out there. In any given day I can be working on launching a new car, developing a social media promotion for a coffee company, devising a way to get zoo animals on TV… It’s my dream job, and I still can’t believe this is what I get to do each day.

RB: What is your personal mantra?
DB: My personal mantra is: You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.

RB: Where do you find creative inspiration for your job?
DB: Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere. The brain is the most gorgeous part of the body. I love how it combines a memory from third grade, a meal in Vienna, a character from a novel, something my 5-year-old son says, and a song lyric…mushes them all together…and spits out an advertising concept that is right on target. Now that you know how I think, you can probably guess whether or not I have a neat desk – ha!

RB: How would you describe your workspace? Your home décor?
DB: My personal and professional décor reflect that fact that I want to live IN the DaVinci Code. I ensconce myself in carved wood, gothic light fixtures and Salvador Dali artwork throughout my home and office. The rest of my agency has a very funky vibe. Our office building is a former bank, and the walk-in vault (complete with safe deposit boxes) is a key focal point. According to legend, our building is haunted by “the blue lady.” I’ve never met her, but I am friends with her on Facebook.

RB: Your job is all about being in the media…How do you unplug?
DB: Unplugging is hard, and focusing is important, but there definitely is crossover between work and personal life. When it comes to my husband and son, however, I make a concerted effort to turn it off. Pushing away the iPhone (gasp!) is essential to “being all there” with them. After all, when I look back on my life, I doubt I’ll be wishing I’d sent more texts! Crossword puzzles and yoga are also great mental Etch-a-Sketches.

RB: What do you love most about your home and why?
DB: I built my house and got to pick out everything in it – which was simultaneously fabulous and stressful. The downstairs level is wide open, and the great room is floored with wide-planks of dark, hand-scraped black walnut, which I love. Floors are so important for grounding a room, and black walnut feels warm, as if it’s been here for generations, equally suited to everyday living and holiday entertaining. Plus, we have a black walnut tree on our property, where we enjoy watching the squirrels steal our nuts, so it brings a little of the outside in.

RB: What is the one thing in your home that everyone always comments on?
DB: Our dining room table. It’s huge, which is ridiculous since there are only three of us in the house, but I had to have it. Distressed wood from Tuscany, braided wood inlay pattern near the perimeter, angled at corners and rounded at edges, in a gorgeous amber color. Ooh, talking about it makes me want to go sit there right now. Definitely the kind of table vampires would enjoy dining at, you know, if they ate food.

RB: What is one piece of wisdom you would share with someone whose dream it is to start their own company?
DB: Stop dreaming about it and do it! Starting a company doesn’t mean opening your doors for business, though. It means getting your plan together so you can be one of the minority whose business succeeds when you do open those doors. (And if it doesn’t, you can always go back to something else…but at least you will have tried.)

RB: If you weren’t running your own company right now, what would you be doing?
DB: I’d be a travel editor. What could be better than being paid to travel the world?

RB: What is your favorite part about your business?
DB: I am so fortunate to have the very best business partner, staff members and clients! Let’s face it: most of us spend more time at work than we do at home. Working side-by-side with smart, talented, caring people on projects for smart, talented, caring people is what work should be all about. And it is!

Fab Friday: Martini Maven, Lolita Healy

by Robin November 28, 2011

Simplifying Fabulous! with Lolita Healy

ABOUT A designer, artist and entrepreneur, Lolita Healy sees something quite extraordinary in the everyday and ordinary of life. She translates her vision into her Lolita collection of glassware (LOVE her martini glasses!), ceramics and many other accessories for the home. Her look is fun, entertaining and is all about celebrating moments with the special people in our lives. We thought what better way to kick off the holiday season with a behind-the-scenes look into the life of a woman who has made celebrating so much fun!

Robin Baron: Tell us a bit about what you do…
Lolita Healy: As a designer I see something quite extraordinary in the everyday and ordinary of life. I bring my vision into my products as a reflection of the Lolita lifestyle. It’s a balance of fun, entertaining and celebrating moments with the special people in our lives. My goal is to inject energy and charm into everything I produce, always pushing my designs in the fashion forward direction.

RB: What was your “ah-ha” moment?
LH: My first “martini moment” began with a girl’s night out with a group of girlfriends. I was browsing for the first time through a martini menu and was inspired by the recipes. After being served a Cosmopolitan, I saw the glass differently; I thought it should be a bit more dressed up with a pattern, with flair and a fabulous recipe on the bottom. After seeing my friends pick a different martini, reflective of their distinctive personality, the foundation for a product line was created. I knew this was something I had to pursue.

RB: What is about the martini glass that is so attractive to women?
LH: I would have to say the shape, definitely the shape.

RB: What are you working on right now?
LH: We are about to launch a drink mix line, for entertaining with a fun whimsical feel and great packaging. We are working on a new line of jewelry as well as the beginning stages of a fashion line. With a fashion line on the horizon, I am inspired by what is happening in the fashion industry, I follow the trends, colors and textures of the European runways and would like to incorporate what I am seeing with my own unique ideas.

RB: How would you describe your workspace? Your home décor?
LH: The studio is located in a renovated building, exposed brick, large windows, and concrete floors with plenty of light. The decor is very modern and chic with fun and colorful design elements displaying my sense of style as well as many Lolita products.

My house is similarly contemporary. My husband, Michael Healy, designed the house. It is a beautiful home situated on 30 acres of land in rural Massachusetts. We have a very similar style in our tastes, clean lines, no patterns (the people and the art are the color!) and sophisticated looks. Michael even designed some of our furniture. I would say it is chic glamour meets Miami bachelor pad!

RB: What do you love most about your home and why?
LH: I love my home because I have lots of privacy and space with very little clutter. My creative brain needs a rest each day after designing with unlimited pattern, shape and color. I am also about to get a new closet, the size of a room, can’t wait for that.

RB: What is the one thing in your home that everyone always comments on?
LH: Everyone always just loves the entranceway, which has a visual of a very open, airy floor plan into the Swedish-style kitchen and sunken living room. When we deck it out for the holidays, it is unbelievable!

RB: What is one piece of wisdom you would share with someone whose dream it is to start their own company?
LH: Go after your dream take a passion or idea and research it. There are many business models you can use you don’t have to go into debt. Take a chance and follow you dream.

RB: If you weren’t running your own company right now, what would you be doing?
LH: Working in the fashion industry, designing clothing.

RB: What do you look forward to as your brand grows?
LH: The Lolita brand is fun with an emphasis on absolutely the most original and creative designs to be found anywhere. The brand is constantly evolving and growing, continue to look for what has made the brand what it is today with a focus on functionality in the home with a flair for fashion, high design, humor and all-out good times.

Six Kitchen Accessories for the Chic Chef

by Robin November 23, 2011

Whether you are whipping up culinary creations in your kitchen this Thanksgiving, or looking for a gift to satisfy a gourmet gourmand, turn any kitchen from drab to fab with these six stylish (and functional!) kitchen accessories.

It’s time to toast the holidays…and I don’t mean with Champagne! Pop Art Toaster’s retro-style toaster turns ordinary breakfast items into festive foods. Brand your bagels, English muffins, Pop Tarts, toast, buns and more with a Christmas stamp that’s sure to get even the pickiest eaters to partake! Pop Art also has other varieties of fun kitchen accessories for year-round smiles.

Smeg‘s candy-colored refrigerators are confectionery treats for us design lovers! The 9.22 cubic feet capacity is enough to satisfy your sweet (and savory) tooth, and with ten different hues to choose from (I love the cotton-candy pink, sea green and  bright blue), there’s something for everyone!

This punchy green melamine bowl from Joseph Joseph makes salad serving a cinch. The bowl comes equipped with hand-like servers integrated into the design for a fun and functional twist on entertaining.

For those who enjoy cooking, space is precious in even the roomiest of kitchens, which is why we love this collapsible colander by OXO. The innovative design comes in a chic red or gray, and stands up to all of your straining services. Holding up to three-and-a-half quarts, it can be collapsed down to a mere two inches in height for convenient storage.

For those of looking to create gourmet magic, you’ll need a wand to whip up your culinary creations. This whimsical whisk from Anthropologie is at the top of our list, with a trendy coral-and-turquoise color punch and a twisting coil through the middle for thorough mixing.

When chestnuts are done roasting on an open fire, crack them open with this cubist nutcracker by Charles and Marie. Both functional and stylish, the simple design is much more effective than its metal counterparts. Simply place the nut in an indentation, press the other cube on top and give it a gentle whack. Voila! The nut opens, with the kernel still intact.

Fab Fridays: Designer Stacy Garcia

by Robin November 11, 2011

Simplifying Fabulous! with Stacy Garcia

ABOUT Stacy Garcia is a product designer whose inventive use of color and texture shines through in everything she does, from wallcoverings to stain-resistant upholstery!  Her signature designs and in-depth knowledge of color and trends are informed by a long and rich history of working with hotel chains such as Hilton, Marriott, Doubletree and Holiday Inn. Where does all of the creativity come from? Stacy says she draws colors, patterns, and product inspiration from travel! For today’s Fab Friday we find out how Stacy simplifies fabulous in her work and life! (If you’re in NYC Sun -Mon, Nov. 13th-14th, find Stacy at the  Boutique Design New York Trend Walk at the Javits Center!)

Robin Baron: Tell us a bit about what you do?
Stacy Garcia: I am creative director of my namesake lifestyle brand that focuses on designing interior products for hospitality and home. I create the patterns, textures and styles that inspire today’s leading hospitality designers and lets individuals bring the luxury of resort living home.

RB: What are you working on right now?
SG: At the Stacy Garcia design studio we always have lots brewing… I am proud to announce the launch of LebaTex’s (my other company and certified women owned business) first-ever designer upholstery book. This product  uses nanotechnology to repel permanent stains and spills. I have four children, so I tested it out myself!

RB: What project in your portfolio are you most proud of?
SG: I am the curator of the Boutique Design New York Trend Walk that will take place this Sun.-Mon., Nov. 13th -14th, at the Javits Center in NYC. This has been a totally new experience for me and a chance to showcase trend forecasting to the hospitality industry. It has been fun to collaborate with the three design firms chosen to interpret our forecasted trends. I can’t wait to see everyone experience the Trend Walk and really explore each trend.

RB: What do you love most about your work?
SG: I love that my work designing interior product and spaces, serves as the backdrop to all the moments in our lives. I have the ability to make your home feel comfortable, enliven your senses, change your mood, or as you say Robin, make you feel fabulous.

RB: What impact has working in the design industry made on you?
SG: At Stacy Garcia, we consider ourselves lucky to be part of an exciting design community — not to mention the communities in which we live and work. Our best work and greatest joys come through collaboration, whether we’re exploring our favorite sources of inspiration, working with professional groups to forecast colors and create designs, or reaching out to nonprofit organizations to create a better world. It’s really all about the amazing people I’ve had the luxury of working with. Also, spending time learning the art of forecasting trends has allowed me to become much more sensitive to the psychology behind the way we live and interact and the decisions we are making.

RB: How would you describe your own home décor?
SG: Because I have spent so many years designing for some of the best hotels, I like to bring that feeling of a relaxing and luxurious hotel stay into my home. The best way to do that is focusing on the little things. For example in the bathroom, treat yourself to plush towels and bath mats, use aromatherapy candles to help relax and give yourself little amenities like nice shampoos and soaps.

RB: What’s inspiring you now?
SG: After 11 years of being a mother of three boys, I finally have a daughter! I’ve been having so much fun designing a nursery for a little girl. It doesn’t get much more inspiring than that!

RB: What do you love most about your home and why?
SG: Family. Nothing makes me smile more than the sound of my children’s laughter filling our home.

RB: What is the one thing in your home that everyone always comments on?
SG: The wallcoverings! The Stacy Garcia wallcoverings aren’t your grandmother’s wallcoverings and that always surprises my guests.  They have texture and help make a space feel well designed. Some of my residential wallcoverings even have Swarovski crystal!
