The Latest in Eco-Friendly Paints and More!

by Robin May 9, 2012

With the warm temps and low humidity, spring is the perfect season to start your next indoor or outdoor painting project for your home. I’ve done some digging around on what you need to consider before you break out the rollers and brushes. Here’s my top 5 key points to consider when choosing a paint product:

  1. What is the quality of the paint?
  2. How much traffic does the room/area get?
  3. Are there smokers in the home?
  4. Is there a fireplace that is used on a regular basis during the winter months, and does the damper work properly?
  5. Is the product eco-friendly?

Today I’m giving you a sneak peak at the latest in paint technology and color courtesy of Jackie Jordan, Director of Color Marketing for Sherwin Williams (below, far right). Jackie’s 23+ years of experience in forecasting color and consulting with the design community has culminated in Sherwin Williams’ latest line of eco-friendly, premium paints, Emerald™.

Jackie and the rest of the Sherwin Williams team introduced me to this luxury paint for both interior and exterior use that’s set to premier in stores nationwide July 1st. “The color accuracy and vibrancy in this new line of paints is amazing,” exclaimed Jackie. The key ingredient? Their new ColorCast Eco Toners™. “ColorCast enabled us to create a paint with premium performance and environmental benefits combined without sacrificing on color quality” stated Jackie.  Emerald also offers supreme coverage and durability as well as superb washability.  Forget the priming and no more worries about unsitely wall marks! And the product is even shipped in environmentally packaging as well.

Sherwin now uses ColorCast Eco Toner in all their paint lines, not just Emerald. That means no more compromising with a limited color range for your next decorating project! Jackie was excited to tell me that that means “more than 1,5000 Sherwin Williams colors or custom color matches are available with this environmentally-friendly technology.” Here, Christine Pittel of House Beautiful and Steve Revnew, Vice President of Product Innovation at Sherwin-Williams check out the amazing vibrancy of the colors.

Jackie pulls her inspiration from everywhere she travels. Now you can too with Sherwin’s new app, Color Snap that lets you capture and save your favorite hues as you travel throughout your day. Share with your friends or create a custom color palette by matching your pic to Sherwin’s line. Check out Jackie’s latest color predictions for 2012.

Now that you’ve selected your palette and paint, make sure you put it on correctly! To learn everything you need to know about mixing, brush selection, application and more, check out TLC’s How to Paint a Room. You’ll be the hit of the next painting party!

Quick and Easy Kitchen Fixes

by Robin May 2, 2012

I love the idea of “quick and easy fixes,” for me, it’s a matter of seeing materials in a new  way and having a different perspective on how to achieve this. Julia Child once said “In department stores, so much kitchen equipment is bought indiscriminately by people who just come in for men’s underwear.” I believe we never have to sacrifice creativity for convenience…I think we can have both! With just a bit more thought, we can create a custom look without going over budget. It’s all about thinking out of the box for ways to turn everyday materials into something fabulous!

For this fun project, I began the kitchen renovation with used cabinets from Green Demolitions, a groundbreaking company that removes and recycles existing cabinets, fixtures, and décor and then resells them (at incredible prices, I might add). Even better, the proceeds support Recovery Unlimited, a charity commited to recycling, creating jobs, and supporting economic stimulus. So while you’re saving money, you’re also doing your part to save the planet.

After the cabinets were installed, I made one of the simplest alterations in the book – I changed the hardware! This is one of the quickest, most significant ways to change the look of a kitchen.

Next, I bought ready-made laminate counter tops, which are available at Home Depot and Lowe’s. They come in a few standard lengths with an attached 3’’ backsplash. I made sure to pick up matching sheets of faux-granite laminate to use in other areas of the kitchen, like on the island where I inset inexpensive cutting boards, and created a custom looking, and practical, detail.

To add interest to the cabinets and create more impact in the kitchen overall, I went to my local hardware store…one of my favorite places to shop and get inspiration! I found vinyl garden lattices, spray-painted them dark brown to mimic the oil-rubbed bronze details I chose for the kitchen, and installed them on the sides of the cabinets over sheets of the extra laminate. I then took large, silver toned, washers and bolts, drilled them between some of the open spaces of the lattice, and punctuated the pattern.

I think a stainless backsplash is a cool touch to any kitchen revamp. Tiles can be pricey, so my solution was to go back to the hardware store and stock up on stainless grills – yes, the same ones usually used for radiator covers! They give a “big bang for the buck” by adding needed texture, and became a wonderful feature in this room.

It’s fun to add a pop of color for some visual interest, so I painted the walls a bright orange…one of my favorite colors right now.

For a finishing touch, I found some fun pendant lights at Lowe’s to hang over the peninsula and island.

Presto! With just a few quick tricks, we achieved a custom look on a tiny budget…it’s all a matter of being open to seeing things in a different way!

Va Va Voom Vases

by Robin April 2, 2012

I always think of accessories for the home like jewelry on a woman.  A fabulous vase is like a room’s answer to a statement necklace! A space could easily go without it, but why should it?  This versatile accent piece can heighten a room’s drama when properly positioned!

Adding a bit of flair to a bookshelf, or table, can be as simple as adding a vase. Like people, vases come in all kinds of shapes and sizes so it’s easy to dress up a room to be unique as you are.

Playing with a pop of color can make any room even more interesting.  One fab look is taking a neutral palette room and adding vases… of almost any color…to create an exciting and unexpected look.

Here are some vases you can use for your own inspiration to add intrigue to your existing décor:

Silver Vase from Jonathan Adler
Gold Vase from Kelly Wearstler
Green/Blue Cast Resin Vases from Robin Baron Design at VandM
Hive Vases from West Elm
Striped Bottle Vase from Anthropologie
Yellow Lacquered Vases, Chevron Vase, and Turquoise and White Vases from Z Gallerie

Strike While the Iron is Hot!

by Robin March 28, 2012

This industrial glam trend was all fired up at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show last week.  Whether you use iron in the room or as a detail to accessorize, here are some of my favorite iron pieces from the show.

I love DESIGNLUSH!  This is just one of their many FAB pieces!  This multi-pendant ceiling fixture makes a great statement and adds a sculptural element to a room.

We discovered the Taylor Group at the show.  They make wonderful custom lighting and use iron in almost all of their pieces.  I couldn’t resist this interesting iron wall clock.  How cool!

These industrial chic iron and hand blown glass sconces are another one of their great looks.

Another one of my favorite vendors for this style is Strawser & Smith.  These “grate” (great!) pendants are a beautiful example of their creativity.

This credenza is one of my go-to pieces for an industrial look.  What a perfect combination of iron paired with re-purposed steel and wood.

This year’s Architectural Digest show was one of the best I’ve been to!  And remember…Confidence Begins at Home!

Me and The New Traditionalists

by Robin March 26, 2012

Corset laces, zebra print, and belt buckles… Oh my! So me!!!

They’re hot trends on the runway and now you can get them for your home.  I discovered The New Traditionalists collection at the Architectural Digest show and we seem to be a match made in heaven!

We were both decked out in the same fab flair.  Here are a few of my favorite fashion trends this furniture company is rockin’!

A perfect example of how fashion can influence home decor and how to translate trends from the runway to the homeway.

All tied up
Look at this laced-up leather bar stool. It matches the leggings I happened to wear to the show!  Corseting is not just for the French, it’s been popping up in home decor and furniture design recently just see my post for the New York Gift Show.

Belt it out
A fabulous belt buckle kicks an outfit (or chair!) up a notch.  This chair no. 45 is decked out with antique brass buckles.  Now that’s cool!

It’s all about the accessories here (isn’t it always!).  My zebra print bag is the perfect accent to my outfit just as the New Traditionalist‘s chair no. 64 is to a dining room table.  Or get wild in the bedroom by adding this zebra hide headboard no. 21 to your boudoir.

I love that The New Traditionalist‘s are responsibly fashionable.  They manufacture and design locally and are eco-friendly with low VOC finishes and sustainable hardwoods.

Stay tuned, more to come from the Architectural Digest Home Design Show!

Beautify your Bathroom

by Robin March 19, 2012

I consider the bathroom to be one of the most important rooms in the house…and that’s the key!  It’s a room of its own and deserves as much attention as all the others.  So think about decorating your bathroom as you would the rest of your home.

Our time in the bathroom helps set the tone for the day!  We spend a lot of time getting ready, primping and preening, whether it is putting on our make up or shaving our faces (hopefully, just the guys!)!  I feel it’s important to make your bathroom beautiful and surround yourself with things that make you feel positive as you start your day.

I always say, “Think outside the box.”  In this case, think inside the box.  Find an interesting box to keep on your countertop for your skincare or toiletries.  You’ll still have easy access and they won’t be cluttering up your bathroom.  What a great way to add personality and utility all in one fell swoop!

We all need easy access to cotton balls and Q-tips, so I look for unique ways to store them.  I usually look for items that aren’t necessarily meant for a bathroom like cookie jars or these mother of pearl jars.  It’s a great way to add your own personality and keep everything at your fingertips!

Adding a bit of ambiance is good for any room, especially your bath.  What better way to set a mood then with candles…and because we are talking about decor, the candle holders are the most important feature to consider.

Whether it’s mixing mercury glass votive holders in a vignette with perfume bottles on a small tray to create a glam effect; or creating a sculptural look with these pierced porcelain candleholders from West Elm, it’s another way to create your own distinctive look.

You can even shop around your own home.  Sometimes that’s all the retail therapy we need!  Before you go out and purchase brand new accessories, walk though your home and see what you can reuse.  maybe that vintage tray in your bedroom could be a perfect catchall in the bathroom.  An interesting mug or glass could be an unexpected toothbrush holder.

We all keep tissues in our bathroom and that gives us another great opportunity to accessorize!  After all, why just put a plain box of tissues on the counter?  There are many cool tissue box holders on the market, so you’re bound to find the perfect one for you to complete your look.

Many, even most, companies make matching wastebaskets allowing you to mix and match new and found items to pull your room together like this photograph using vintage crystal perfume bottles and the painted mirror tissues holder with matching wastebasket.

I love the hunt.  So whether that means scouring the flee markets, secondhand stores, or even, sometimes, your own home…have fun finding things that make you smile.  Feeling good about yourself, your life, or both is what it’s all about!

Green is for St. Patty’s Day!

by Robin March 12, 2012

I could easily show you some fabulous green colored items you could use in your home in honor of St. Patrick’s Day…but everyone can be literal!  Instead, I’m going to share some great “green” ways to spruce up your Spring! It’s almost here and the perfect time to freshen up your home!

One of the easiest ways to give your home a quick makeover is a coat of paint. There is nothing better than a dose of color to breathe new life into your home…and life! When choosing paint for your decor update, take a cue from the Irish this St. Patty’s Day and go green!

No, I don’t mean to paint the walls green! I’m talking about using eco-friendly paint which has no or low VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds).  VOC’s are harmful gasses that are omitted by many types of paint and finishes including glues and varnishes…not good for you or the environment.

When it comes to paint, these two companies are as good as it gets!

Sherwin-Williams’ Harmony line is water based and has zero VOC’s so your family can breathe easy…you’re doing something good for the environment as well as your health! And their new HGTV Home line has “on trend” color palettes that take the guess work out of coordinating your paint colors.  Can being green get any easier…or more fashionable?

Benjamin Moore is also a long standing favorite of mine. This paint powerhouse has a wide range of zero and low VOC paint collections. My picks? Aura and Ben.  These lines have great colors and paint professionals love them because they go on so beautifully.  I also like their new Color Stories line.  It offers colors inspired by nature, architecture, food, and so much more.  Recently we asked Simplifying Fabulous! readers to share their own color story to win a gallon of any of Benjamin Moore’s great paints. Color Stories is a fun line that allows you to make it your own by expressing your personal style all while being eco-conscious!

While you think about your painting project, a little food for thought…you don’t have to paint the entire room to create a big impact.  Painting one wall can make a dramatic difference and it may be all you need to give you that new FAB look you’ve been looking for.  And don’t forget the ceiling!  I feel that the ceiling is often a missed opportunity to pull a room together.  Step out of your comfort zone and paint it a deep color, a lighter tone of your walls, or use a metallic paint for a little extra glam!

Remember, Confidence Begins at Home… so make it fun and make it yours!
